***This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to comment #28, Deena! I know you and your family are going to just love the V.Reader as much as we do!***
We have been fans of Family Reading Night for awhile in our house.
In the wintertime, we love to have what the kids call “Family Fire Night.” We light a fire in the fireplace, pop some popcorn and all curl up in the living room, snuggling together to read books, maybe playing a board game, and just enjoying some unplugged time together.
When my husband is traveling for work, the kids and I will often go to the library in the afternoon or after dinner, then come home and read the night away with all of our new books. It’s such a great quiet evening when Mama is a little fried after being with loud, energetic kids all day!
During the summer – especially on summer vacation – we love to read even more. Tonight we’re in Virginia Beach and, after spending an exhausting day on the beach and at the hotel pool, we’re having a Family Reading Night at the hotel: My husband reading on his Nook, my 7-year-old reading a chapter book, me reading picture books to my 2-year-old and my 5-year-old reading a book on her V.Reader. It is unbelievably peaceful.
Well, peaceful for having 5 people in a small room. My Gracie is so proud that she is reading on the V.Reader by herself. Ellie is getting annoyed at her because Gracie is reading aloud so we can all hear that she’s reading. (Just keepin’ it real.) She’s been reading it all vacation and I’m already seeing amazing progress with her. She can even complete the reading comprehension game – which is all reading! I’m so proud of her and I’m so excited to get her a new book.

cdziuba@aol.com I encourage my children to read, and have done so for years, but taking them to the library, and also by setting an example, I read all the time
I have not tried a Family Reading Night.

WE have a family reading night! The kids are different ages so each one chooses the book (or chapter) for the night. WE take weekly trips to the library for new titles to keep the kids excited.

We do a family reading time pretty often. Because I have two emerging readers and two nonreaders, we usually read to them. But, we let them pick a book we’ll all enjoy. We just finished Clock Without a Face which was fun.
We read every night before bed and try to read throughout the day…I love to read all the time!
we read together quietly= we read to eachother- we go to the library and search for new adventures
we read together and they read on their own before bed. we do not currently do a fam reading night, but will start soon!
I try to make it a habit and read to my daughter every night and i choose exciting new books she will be interested in.

We take frequent trips to the library. I haven’t tried a family reading night yet. Sounds like a great idea.
We have the kids read to us, then we discuss what they read. They love it.
My kids love to read. I encourage them to write a play on what they read. They act it out in front of friends and this encourages others to find out more and read the book.
We are a family of readers just necessarily not together. However, I insist that my son and I read together every night and sometimes daddy joins us. But I like your idea and will definitely try it.

Family reading night is an awesome idea- we do bedtime stories but this sounds like it will work well when the kids get a little bigger and can sit still- hey maybe they’ll sit still for a reader! lol.

My family goes to the library every week for new books. We love to read. We don’t currently have a family reading night. However we are currently participating in our library’s summer reading program. Now we challenge each other to see who can read the most books for the summer.
I am subscribed to Girlymama’s feed by email.
We go to the library often and they participate in the summer bookclub for kids there. Every few weeks , we pick a book and have a theme party or day. It is a lot of fun.
I haven’t tried a family reading night, but I love the idea. I’m ashamed to admit that I just took my 3 yo daughter to the library for the first time a couple of weeks ago, but we have a large selection of books at home. And now the little guy is starting to get into books…they’re easily accessible so they can grab them whenever they want.

We go to the library every week and then sit down and read the new books. Abby is enjoying her brand new library card. We also have family reading morning on Sunday mornings after pancakes. Mom and Dad read the Sunday paper, and the kids are supposed to ‘book browse’ (The pancakes and reading both happen before church at 10:30, so now you know just how early everyone wakes up around here).
We have a family reading time every evening about the same time and the kids go to the local library where they can pick out their own books they want to read.
Our daughter reads everything and anything practically nonstop throughout the day, so encouragement here is not needed. At six years old, she can read anything an adult can.
We do not have family reading night, but I think its important to lead by example…have the kids see you reading
I love to read! It is almost a bad habit sometimes. We read a lot during quiet time, when my youngest kids are sleeping. You are guaranteed to find at least one of us reading on any given evening. Right now I’m reading the first Lemony Snicket book aloud to my daughters. We love reading!
How fun! I love books- my husband is always commenting that the kids have too many books- I don’t think it’s possible! I have book storage in both their rooms and the living room so that books are accessible whenever the mood strikes. We have a two year old and a four year old so we haven’t done a familiy reading night yet- but I’m looking forward to it! Thanks for hosting this givaway!
Hurray, I just subscribed via email (which I’ve been meaning to do anyway so that I wouldn’t waste so much time checking- but this was good inspiration!)
We’ve never had a family reading night, but I tell my kids about books I enjoyed as a child and that makes them want to read them.
I’ve actually encouraged my son to read by letting him read to my daughter on the potty (she’s potty training)
we go to the library every week and let them pick them all read from what they get
We have a Family Reading Night Twice a week. We read a book to our son and at the end we ask him questions about what we read. Then reward him if he gives answers. It becomes fun and reading both at the same time.

I have but one lamp wait which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past.
My girls get to pick one book a night to be read to them. My oldest will insist to sleep with her book after reading. I guess she is hooked.
we usually read 2-3 stories every night. My husband doesn’t read much, but when we watch a movie that is interesting, he want to read the books. Like Lord of the rings.

Every night my daughter and I spend 30 minutes before bed reading together. Sometimes we read a story out loud together or other times we read silently. It is a relaxing way to end the night!

I haven’t tried a family reading night but I try to get my daughter to read by reading with her.
We read quite a bit during the summer and always participate in the summer reading program through our library. I love having family reading nights when we’re camping – nothing like cuddling in a tent after a long day with a good story!
We go to the library once a week for everyone to get new books. We have 30 minutes a day where everyone has to read.
I buy lots of books for my kids in order to keep them reading. We have not had a reading night.
I would love a family reading night, but the closest we come is my 3 boys piling on me in our oversized chair for me to read to them.
I am a huge library girl and I encourage kids to be a part of the summer reading program (I’m in the adult reading program myself!). I’d love to win this for my nephew!
To tell you the truth, I don’t really need to encourage my family to read, we’re all book lovers in this house! It would be fun to do more reading together, however, and this Family Reading Night Challenge event has motivated me to think of a plan. My daughter and I love Shel Silverstein’s poem. I think it would be a lot of fun if we took turns reading and acting out the poems. We’ll have to try it, even the little ones would enjoy participating!

We read every night before bed, but we’ll have to come up with a family reading night.
We’ve not tried a family reading night but it sounds like a wonderful idea. We do encourage reading by taking the kids to the library and letting them choose the books they would like.

We haven’t tried a family reading night, but we read often, especially in the summer. We head to the library and pick out a bunch of good books — the girls will often bring their books in the car while we run errands. Hubby and I wind down at night in bed with our books! (And as a side note, I LOVE your blog — this is the first time I’ve commented on anything, but you are hilarious! I came by way of your s-i-l’s (sunny side of life) blog, whom I know from church.)
And now I’ve officially subscribed, since I read it all the time anyway!
I also promoted the contest on my blog: symphonyinseason.wordpress.com
We always sign up for the Summer Reading Program at the public library and it really keeps the kids interested in reading. We have family reading nights all of the time.
MANDATORY ENTRY: I read to my daughter every single night before bed. I will read an entire story to her and if she is still not alseep, my daughter will then read me the same story, but according to the pictures. She doesn’t know how to read yet, but we’re working on it.

Family reading night sounds like a great idea.
I lead by example..let them see me reading, so they know it can be fun.
All except my grandson are adults now, so family reading night doesn’t exist for us. But when the girls were younger, I made certain that they were enrolled in the summer reading programs at the public library–an excellent way to keep them interested. That always led to exploration of different books and subjects on their own.
Family reading night is every night at my house. We make it fun by having books at kid level so they can pick and choose themselves. We also have books based on movie they love like Toy Story, Nemo, Dr. Seuss, etc…They enjoy reading alot so it isn’t hard to get them interested in plopping down and reading a book outloud.

We read together nearly every night, usually from the Bible.
I encourage my kids to read by reading to them every night before bed. Then my nearing four year old always wants his turn to “read” the book to me and his little brother!
