Totstravel

My day in numbers:

400: Number of miles I drove today.
7: Number of hours I spent in the car today.
3: Number of kids that were with me.
0: Number of other adults to help me.
15: Number of chicken nuggets ordered for lunch at Wendy's.
2: Number of stops for diaper changes along the way.
397: Number of times I heard "Are we there yet?"
4: Number of movies watched by the kids while I drove.
1: Number of people who saw my underwear when my son opened the door of the bathroom stall at the rest stop.
25: Number of minutes my 2-year-old napped. ALL DAY.

We've traveled all over the place with toddlers. Including a trip halfway around the world that involved 36 consecutive hours of traveling. (No joke.) Traveling with a toddler requires endless patience, a sense of humor and – ideally – the same brand of luggage Mary Poppins uses so you can bring all the necessities that toddlers require!

So believe me when I say that I understand that traveling with a toddler is not for the faint of heart. And, finally, so does a hotel chain.

Marriott hotels is introducing Tots Travel Too™, a program designed to make travel
easier for families with young children
, that will be available at more than 2,500
Courtyard, Fairfield Inn & Suites, SpringHill Suites, Residence Inn
and TownePlace Suites hotels in the continental U.S. and Canada.

This complimentary Tots Travel Too program provides guests, upon
request, with a travel crib and laundered COVERPLAY® removable crib
slipcover to ensure their “traveler-in-training” can rest comfortably.
For a bit of bath time fun, a complimentary gift comes with the
COVERPLAY, an animal squirtie toy.  In addition, parents who have
forgotten to pack their tot’s essentials can contact the front desk for
complimentary items, including outlet covers, nightlights, baby
shampoo, and baby lotion, plus disposable bibs will be available in the
breakfast areas.

Tots Travel Too Marriott and TheMotherhood.com are giving one lucky Girlymama reader a $250 Marriott Gift Card and a Marriott
Tots Travel 2 Welcome Basket to give away (if there's no
Marriott-affiliated hotel nearby, winners can use the gift card at Shop Marriott)
! Here's how to enter:

Marriott and TheMotherhood.com
are creating "The Ultimate Traveling with Toddlers Must-Have Tip
Sheet" and we need help!

Mandatory Entry: Leave a comment sharing your best tip for traveling with toddlers.
Extra Entry #1: Leave a SEPARATE comment telling me you subscribed to my feed by email or in a reader.
Extra Entry #2:  Leave another comment telling me in what way you promoted this contest (i.e., posting about it on your blog or Facebook, or  Tweeting about it.

Contest ends Tuesday, June 29th. Entries such as "Enter me" or "I want to win" will NOT be counted. Winners will be selected by Random.org, announced back here on this post, and notified via email with further instructions. If I don't hear from the winner in 48 hours, I will be choosing a new winner.

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post. I am working in partnership with Marriott and
TheMotherhood.com to cover the Marriott Tots Travel Too program and have
received a stipend.

Bless your heart – sounds like a challenging trip! My best tip for traveling with the younger set is to create a bag of inexpensive new toys for the little one ahead of time, and then periodically bring out a new toy when tempers start to fray. The secret is to make the treat something they have never seen before!
    Good luck with the trip!

Hilarious. We haven’t traveled a lot with our daughter and she’s not exactly a toddler yet, but one thing that has worked for us is traveling at night so she sleeps the whole time (when possible). I’ll definitely be taking notes on the rest of the comments for our future travels ;-)

    Sarah says:

When my daughter was about 3, we took a plane trip, and I got some books from the library about how planes fly. She learned about gravity, and when the plane was starting up, we were able to talk about what was going on instead of her being scared of the loud noises.

    Amy says:

My biggest “tip” (which is not so exciting since most moms do this already) … but I have snacks out the wazoo!! This keeps hands busy (and hearing a lot less of “he’s touching me!”) and mouths busy eating (and not arguing/telling stories that go on and on and on… not that I have anyone who does this in my house …) :)
And I’m glad to know that traveling alone with 3 is possible … I’m sure I will have to do that one of these days here (although I’m hoping not … trips to the grocery store with 3 kids are not fun as it is!!) :)

Normally we travel to NC, about an 8 hour drive. We always pack snacks, leave at 3 a.m. and keep a basket of new (cheap) toys. This year he has a vtech pocket smile w/a car adapter, too.

no exerience on travelling with toddlers, but my suggestion about travelling with a three month old: leave the MINUTE she’s been fed .. have the car packed and every other person completely ready to go.
I just wish the Fairfield by Marriott we stayed at last week knew they were supposed to have this program – they just looked at me like I was crazy!

    Andrea says:

Dry erase markers to use on airplane windows…amazing! Portable DVD player saves my sanity! As for staying in a hotel…we always bring our children’s own fuzzy blankets so they feel comfortable. A white noise machine is amazing as well! And someone once suggested bringing an inflatable tub…great tip! Can you tell we travel a lot too?

  15. 15
    Milian Ortiz says:

My best tip for traveling with toddlers is “practice”. Toddlers are the best at mimicking adults. Practice airplane etiquette and procedures a couple days before, turning it into a fun game. Reward them frequently during the flight for their practiced good behavior.

Oh my gosh – that intro CRACKED me up. I only have 1, and sometimes I feel like it’s too much to handle! She’s a handful on roadtrips! My best tip – whether it’s a loooooong trip or a trip to the mall – BE PREPARED. Have a stocked diaper bag – snacks – drinks – pacifiers. It’s the WORST to be stuck in need of something for your kid and totally be without it! Second best tip? Box of toys for the car. I have a basket full of books and fun toys – just so she can reach over her seat to grab as she needs!

    Katie says:

Tips: we take a canvas bin of favorite familiar toys from home and pull out one at a time as needed. the only new toys we use are happy meal toys (i eat the happy meal) because they are terribly intriguing for little ones. one more is singing to/with them when they get cranky and have one parent in the backseat as a backseat buddy every once in a while to mix it up.

  21. 21
    Meredith says:

Lots and lots of baby wipes. You can use them to clean dirty hands, clean up little spills in the car, clean a table before eating! they are must for any age!

  22. 22
    Peter says:

Snacks and food – must have. Take stops as needed. Music can help to keep them entertained. If at all possible, try not to get them hooked on watching videos at an early age because it makes future trips that much more dependent on videos. We never really had a lot of problems – activity books, music, radio, car games, Veggie Tales :) , and be prepared to have a very energetic child at the end of the trip.
I’d recommend semi-regular stops that let the child get out some energy – rest areas, fast food restaurants w/ a play yard, parks, whatever – it can be a great help for a happy trip.
Still remember handing Cheerios and sweet potato puffs to a kid on the road one or two at a time. They made great snack/finger foods.

We LOVE to travel!!!! At 21 months old, my daughter has been to 17 states and two countries so far. That includes a road trip from PA to Arkansas when she was 6 mos. This fall we’re heading to Texas!
    Best tips:
Be flexible. Sometimes we don’t even make hotel reservations ahead of time for the driving portion of our trip. We “drive til we drop” and find a place where we are. I like not having a “deadline” to our driving. If we’re tired, we stop. If we still have some energy, we keep going.
Plan rest stops that have playgrounds for kids to burn off energy. Use your GPS to find a local park or even McDonald’s with playplace off the highway. Stop there for 15-20 minutes and let the kids burn off steam, even if you pile back into the car and eat while driving.
Thanks for the giveaway- would LOVE TO WIN- this would help out so much for our Texas roadtrip!!

I hear ya on the traveling! Heading to Myrtle Beach, SC on Friday-our first long driving trip! My son has flown over 20 times in his short 2yrs of life…but driving is a different ballgame! When I travel-I make sure I have plenty of wipes on hand (I’m not a germaphobe-but can’t stand plane germs!) I also bring crayons that I have tied to strings and I attach them to the inside of his ‘special bag’ to keep them from rolling under the seats.

My son travels like a champ, but my travel tip is to plan the hardest/most nerve-wracking (for me)portion of the trip during his naptime, i.e. we get a flight for just before his nap should start so he has time to see all the ‘new’ stuff, then settle down and sleep.
We also try and leave for car trips just before he’s about to go down as well.
We’ve actually had people tell us they didnt know we had a baby (9mo at the time)onboard.

My best tip for traveling with kiddos is too just relax. Being uptight and determined to stay on a strict schedule is NOT going to work so let it go and just plan on enjoying what’s in front of you. We do mostly car rides when we go places so I always go to the Dollar Store or Target’s $1 aisle to create little vacation activity bags for the kids. Add some snacks and juice boxes and they are good to go. Of course there is always the travel games too of finding certain color cars, objects outside, signs, and alphabet games. No matter what…HAVE FUN!!!!

My best tip for traveling with a toddler is to have as many movies as you can possibly bring. We took our oldest to Hawaii when he was 18 months and it took us 2 6 hour flights to get there. Plastic baggies! They hold stinky diapers, wet clothes, snacks, toys with little pieces, etc. Oh, that and keep your sense of humor! And remember (especially if flying) that if your kids are rotten and you look like a mess, chances are you’ll never see your fellow travelers again. :-P

I think the thing that has helped us the most would be the portable DVD player and a set of headphones! We have been able to drive many miles over the years with the DVD player and their favorite movies and lots of snacks. The headphones are great because you can only take so many “Barney” episodes in a row! ;-) A portable bed rail is also nice when you have an older toddler…you can make all kinds of “beds” when in hotel rooms if you have one of those (couch/floor with pillows, etc, can make great makeshift beds if you have the rail)!
Thanks for the opportunity to enter!

I haven’t had to drive very long with my toddler, but I’ve flown plenty – one of the things I always make sure to have in our carry-on bag is something chewy he can chew on during take off and landing, to help him pop the pressure in his ears. We’ve done Stretch Island fruit strips, roll-ups, tootsie roll, and even skittles. Nothing too gooey, but easy to open and easy to get to. Gum works great for older kids and adults, but often toddlers don’t really know to keep chewing on the gum, with chewy fruit strips they keep taking bites and chewing. Its fun for them, they get a snack and it helps with the pressure in their ears.

My first thought was simply “stay at home.” But I never listen to that advice myself… so here goes my backup tips: #2 keep the snacks relatively sugar-free. A spazzed-out kid is not going to help. #3 Cheap DVD players can be bought in most stores for $99. My kids know it’s only for the really long trips – not the quick store runs. #4 Games are a life saver. Travel bingo is a fav – they concentrate so hard on finding things it actually sometimes gets QUIET. And #5: remember they are little ones and have patience. And try to enjoy yourself. They will be snarky teenagers with iPods in no time.

We have an 11 year old and 20 mo old twins so my travel tip when flying is TAKE THE CAR SEAT!!! Strapping the baby/toddler in a car seat on the airplane ideally fools the child into thinking they are in a car and can’t get out. To make traveling with a car seat through the airport rent a “gogo Kidz Travelmate” that attaches to the car seat. This way you can simply roll the car seat with child in it through the airport! Best travel tips for traveling with toddlers? Check to see if the doors in your car have child safety locks – the kind where they can’t open the door from the inside. Usually it is a latch in the door that you switch over (open the door and look at where the locking mechanism is – there may be a switch or latch). When my son was a toddler, he figured out how to use his foot to unlock and open his door WHILE THE CAR WAS MOVING! Terrifying as a parent, flying down the freeway, right?
And, always put a towel down across the seat, under the car seats to make cleanup much easier.

We are getting ready to travel tomorrow and I have 2 little ones….what I always do is travel with a humidifier so that we have white noise. This way when the kids are alseep we aren’t walking on eggshells if we’re in a hotel AND we don’t worry as much about noisey neighbors. Another must-have is the kid’s bedtime “things” such as stuffed animals, pacifiers, sippy w/water, blankies, etc…I try to make their bed familiar to them meaning we “set it up” like their bed/crib at home. And as always, lots of books, snacks, and drinks for the car ride.

Each summer we alternate trips to OuterBanks, NC or Myrtle Beach, SC. What works for us is leaving around 10pm and driving through the night…my son always sleeps most of the way. Also, have plenty of snacks, coloring books, notebooks, etc handy. We use a portable travel tray to lay out all the toys. Car window crayons or window stickers/decals are a must as well. And, I hate to say it, but a portable DVD player is great in an emergency! These trips have been a breeze so far with all these tools.

  124. 124
    Teresa says:

Oh, that’s a lot of traveling with no other adult help! We make the trek to the shore often over the summer and have camped in a tent with our little one, too. Our number one traveling need is plenty of books, toys and snacks for us and the little one so we don’t get bored or hungry. It doesn’t hurt to have a portable DVD player (or an iPad for MobiStories viewing! That’s on my wish list.)

Games and crayons and books were of no interest to my active three-year-old on our nine-hour flight last summer. That brand new portable DVD player with child-sized headphones with a five-hour battery saved our sanity.
On car trips, we plan to stop every three hours or so somewhere that he can run — or at least walk — around.

I have a great tip. When traveling with my 2 yr old and 6 yr old the hotel was out of rooms with 2 double beds. But what we got was better. It was a room with a king size bed, a roll away crib and a roll away bed. The roll-away bed is much closer to the floor, which is easier for little ones. Good Luck

A tip for traveling with toddlers is to always have some kind of snack that isn’t too messy on hand. also, think about bringing car/train/plane travel toys that are fun but don’t have many parts, aren’t too noisy, and are easy to use.

  156. 156

My best traveling tip is to leave in the middle of the night. When they are asleep the entire time!! haha! We always tend to leave for vacation about 11 pm- so the kids are in the dark and we wake them up to get in the car and after 20 min on the road they are back out for hours! Put in your ear buds and it is a peaceful ride! :)

My best travel tip, is to always pack a small bag with a change of clothes, cloth diaper, wipes, juice an extra sippy cup, a boo boo kit(bandaid’s, neosporin, benadryl, motrin, etc.), a receiving blanket(you just never know when you might need it for changing baby, etc)and a small prepacked snack. For us, I used the hospital diaper bag I got when he was born and I keep this in the trunk. It has everything in it that you might need for back up. I go through it periodically to make sure clothes still fit etc. I also suggest an umbrella stroller or baby carrier. That is a must for babies and toddler’s.
Also, in my experience, their favorite toy is a must have while traveling.

When we went to Arizonia we used this tip(different time zone)
Get them on the new time zone. If possible, prepare them for the new time zone before your trip by shifting their schedule little by little. If you can’t do this, try to keep the child awake the first day until the local bedtime. Also, be sure to wake them the next day at the local morning time

When my kids were too young to understand the concept of time, they still asked the question that all parents dread “When will we get there?’” To give them an answer that they could understand, we would tell them in terms of their favorite TV shows. So 1/2 hour would be, “we will be there in one Barney.” The answer seemed to satisfy them because they understood how long the Barney show lasted.

Also, have a surprise up your sleeve for them (this can be used as a bribe for good behavior once you get to your destination, or maybe in the Middle of your road trip to calm YOUR nerves, and to occupy them. If possible, bring along a portable dvd player and their favorite dvds and also some music that they like (or not…I find that classical music puts them to sleep!) Bring healthy snacks..fruit, bottled water, healthy juice boxes. Make sure that they have their favorite lovey, blankie or pillow and a night light for the hotel room. Liz says:

I think the greatest thing I’ve discovered is music + travel toys = gold. Have a bag of toys that ONLY come out on long car rides. A hand held game that can be played over and over again (for older kiddos, not necessarily toddler friendly) or a special dolly/action figure. If you’re the only parent in the car, maybe this isn’t the best idea because retrieving lost toys could be dangerous. Music is always a good thing, though, because I find that their specific tastes in music are very strong at such a young age, and their favourite tunes could prove a necessary lullaby or distraction for maybe 10 minutes.
Also, snacks. Nothing too filling or messy, and definitely drinks – just water or a low-sugar juice option. I like to keep a whole outfit to the side for traveling only. Something that is super comfortable, that they rarely wear (but is still familiar to them) and is not PJs. Kids are messy, especially at that age, so having a spare outfit tucked under the seat, stored safely in a Ziploc, is key.
It’s been said, but frequent breaks are a lifesaver. Kids are super energetic going to somewhere (coming from… is another story), so letting off some steam at a kid-friendly rest stop is great.

  283. 283
    Jacob says:

My best tip is about the actual activities. When you have a toddler it is a good idea to go to a place that has places for the toddler to have a good time too. Walking tours are an excellent activity. Your toddler can walk or you can push the stroller and both of you will enjoy the scenery. Botanical gardens and zoos have things that will stimulate your child and you can enjoy it too!

My best travel tip–always carry ziplock bags—you never know when you will need them–and you will need them. My 3 yr old was falling asleep holding a large sucker that his uncle bought him —he wouldn’t part with it until I brought out the ziplock bag–and explained we would just save it for later. My 2 year old had an ugly diaper leakage that got on his blankie–anything else would have been tossed—but his blankie was the center of his world. I put it in a ziplock–actually 2 so we didn’t have to smell it–until we could get home to wash it. Once on a trip up the California coast–we were on a windy one lane road and my 5 year old got car sick–no where to pull over for miles–had her throw up in a zip lock bag held it until I could toss it.

At 8 months, we let him enjoy people watching and looking out the plane window. At this point, I think the new toy idea will be great.
